  Grace and Collateral Grace

After 3 attempted starts, the Philadelphia Alpha Conference of 2002 finally settled on The Church of the Good Samaritan in Paoli, PA. We knew the limitations of this venue all too well. When things were finally settled in January we cleared the space and started to prepare in earnest for this event. We could not allow Nicky and the Apha Team from HTB and AlphaNA to return home after the Detroit Conference and leave the Philadelphia area bereft of this blessing.

We started praying, arranged space and sweated the details almost immediately. We needed good weather and good planning under-girded by the faith that God would provide. Doors were opened, calendars cleared and breakout space became available. We decided to limit registrations to 600 which was reached almost 2 weeks before the event. With cancellations, late arrivers and walk ins, we welcomed 660 delegates Thursday morning. Adding the volunteers from Good Samaritan brought us up to 700. We were "pressed down and overflowing" in the sanctuary much to the discomfort of some delegates. For this we offer our regrets. The Alpha team from NA called this "The Intensity of Density" and smiled.

Feedback was almost all positive in spite of high 80s temperatures, hard pews and diminished lighting to keep down the heat. Grace abounded among the 120 pastors and attending delegates from 16 states and 25 denominations and will be further poured out by the many Alpha Courses which surely will result from this event.

We at Good Samaritan just finished our 14th Alpha Course. We are still full of joy and wonder at the Converting Words and Converting Power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that is so engagingly presented by the Alpha Course. We have witnessed many coming to Faith, some leading to Baptisms, seen new excitement from the folks sitting in the pews and found a new spirit at work in the Alpha teams and home groups who have worked hard to make the Alpha Course so vital to our church and a large expression of our outreach and evangelism.

Our thanks to one and all. You clergy -- keep fully involved, stick to the recipe and press on.

In love and faith

Tom & Linda Davis
